FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF VIRGINIA PRISONERS
ARE YOU A MEMBER OF THE ESTIMATED 510,000 VIRGINIA FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER AND FRIEND IMPRISONED IN THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS?
VIRGINIA PRISONS ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE (vapac) is: Virginia families for transparency and accountability in Virginia Department of Corrections and Prisons (VADOC).
TAX PAYERS OF VIRGINIA meaning families and friends of Virginia Prisoners spend a $1 billion a year on the Department of Corrections. Yet VADOC, in the recent words of one Virginia Mother whose son is imprisoned "Behave as if it's above the law and it's accountability.
VIRGINIA PRISONS ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE States: To often those who exploit a biased, one sided and unequal application of the rule of law. Have successfully distorted the idea of holding prison officials accountable as its proponents are soft on crime and coddling prisoners.
VAPAC disagrees. We stand to expose that narrative as a petty argument for prison officials to break laws and violate their own policies and procedures.
VAPAC asserts that no one is above the law especially prison officials who are entrusted with the privilege, of maintaining the imprisonment experiment.
LETS STAND TO MAKE VIRGINIA PRISONS TRANSPARENT AND ACCOUNTABLE.

I think the prison system as a whole needs to be overhauled from a system of oppression and demoralization to one of respect and rehabilitation.
Far too often the guards are in violation of the laws. They do bodily harm to prisoners. The DOJ told me they hire like all other jobs and all guards wont be good. That is unacceptable. The guards are like a gang or overseers. The law is becomimg lawless
Prosecutors are horrible. They are vicious and should be held accountable. False prosecution or malicious prosecution should be against the lae

I spent a total of 20 years in the Virginia DOC. State officials are fooling themselves. The conditions are terrible. The system has progressively gotten worse over the decades. I am glad I am free and clear...a free man who paid his debt.
I totally believe in accountability, but doesn't that apply to state officials as well on any level? They don't practice what they preach.
There are simple solutions. There really are. Maybe they should ask someone who has been through the system...you can only learn so much from a book.
Until those who tend to feel as if they are not impacted by the mass incarceration numbers understand that each year when they pay those taxes they are affected. They are affected not only by those on the inside of the prison walls but also by the families who struggle to survive that have now become one income households. From food to electricity, to child care etc. She’d light on what those individuals hold dear which is their bank account in order to shed light on the wrongs being done.
Until the courts start holding staff of DOC accountable just as the ACA claims to do along with the DOJ which by their claims nothing that is allowed would even be attempted if they knew accountability was an actual thing.
Get those who are in our state government out that seem to be in the pocket of Harold clarke which is shown by events in which not a lot of public body is aware of. So many things that need to be done but the starting point is fo educate yourself on those of which you vote for, stop choosing one or the other for their party and start investigating into their actual beliefs and their associations.
Completely agree
I am sadly frightened by VADOC because that is the state in which I reside and I have had experience because my son served four months in prison in Virginia. I think a lot of the times it starts with judges in court wins, giving excessive sentencing for non-violent crimes and overcrowding our prisons so I think it Hass to start with our judges first and stop sending so many people to prison and find other ways of rehabilitation. Yes, there are programs in place like CORE and Adult Drug Court, but these programs need to be revamped and changed because they’re all about catching people with positive screens, and then getting another felony charge. For example. My own son again while in prison was exposed to the following, the gangs are running the prisons; the guards are involved with bringing in contraband, including tobacco and drugs; it’s so easy to get drugs in prison it’s ridiculous. If you didn’t use before you go, he will use before you get released in many cases. The programs that they have in their “drug rehab program” at Indian Creek really needs to be looked at seriously no one listens, no one is serious about the program and it’s not helping anyone. I was scared to death of my son was in prison. One thing I do not understand is why not have e-cigs, etc, available in commissary. Would that not cut down on the amount of tobacco coming in under the table and inmates are being extorted and charged huge amounts of money to be able to smoke rolled tobacco. I don’t even get me started on the drug problem. I would like to know if the judges that are sending these people to prison are even aware of what’s really going on? Do they even care?
